The Two Kinds of Failovers
Active/Active
- Pros
- Global Load Balancing (GLB) supported
- Automated fail over
- Automated or manual roll back to primary in most cases
- Cons
- (Generally) More expensive then active/passive fail over
- Setup is more complex
- Notes
- If we are going to pay for a colocation site why not utilize it?
- Real time data replication
Active/Passive
- Pros
- Cons
- Manual Failover
- Longer downtime than an automated process (could be just minutes)
- This would require someone to flip the switch, which could be tricky in the event of a disaster.
- No GLB with this option
- The co-location site is not being utilized except in a DR situation.
- Notes
- Daily/weekly data replication.
