Meet the Team: Whitney

Hello and welcome to our Meet the Team series, in which we aim to give you deeper insight into the minds and personalities of those who make up this eclectic, close-knit group. We are developers, marketers, and technical support engineers, and at work we craft everything from Microsoft reporting APIs to mobile email applications. And outside of work? Let’s just say racing against the machine during hackathons, building architecturally sound beer towers during retros, and paddling down the Charles during the warmer months are simply the beginning.

This week we caught up with Support Engineer, Whitney.

1. What do you do?
At SoftArtisans, I’m a developer and I fight with C# all day.  Outside work I have far too many hobbies to fit into my spare time.*

2. What are you listening to right now?
The Decemberists – One Engine .  I swear I liked them before The Hunger Games.  …But probably not before they were cool.

3. When you were 5 what did you want to be and why?
A vet, I think?  I didn’t actually decide to get into CS until I graduated high school and had no choice but to select a major.  For something essentially pulled from a hat, it’s been going rather well.  I also contemplated being a music major for awhile, until I realized that would require practicing.

4. If you were a beer what would you be and why?
A Belgian Wit – light and goes well with a lazy afternoon, but often stronger than expected.

5. Describe your perfect Saturday afternoon in 10 words or less.
Save helpless old woman from mugger, go home, have beer.

6. What 3 things would you bring to a deserted island?
Bear Grylls, The Hobbit, and sunscreen

7. Who would play you in a movie of your life?
I would hope for Summer Glau.  We have vaguely similar looks, and she would be able to deal with all the action scenes that would have to be inserted.  Because if I’m going to bother making a movie about myself, there are going to be explosions and all kinds of fight scenes.

8. What is the last thing you bought?
New sandals, which is not terribly exciting.  Sandal weather, however, is amazing.  And lasts from March until November.

9. What are your biggest pet peeves?
It takes a lot of willpower not to correct other people’s grammar and spelling.  Homonyms are the worst, followed closely by less vs. fewer.

And now I am paranoid that I have made some horrible grammatical mistake answering these questions.

10. Name something that makes you smile.
Baby chameleons.  I mean, come on.

*And what she didn’t tell you was when she’s not battling with C# she’s channeling that energy into fencing and kung fu. En Garde.
