Meet the Team: Seth

Hello and welcome to our Meet the Team series, in which we aim to give you deeper insight into the minds and personalities of those who make up this eclectic, close-knit group. We are developers, marketers, and technical support engineers, and at work we craft everything from Microsoft reporting APIs to mobile email applications. And outside of work? Let’s just say racing against the machine during hackathons, building architecturally sound beer towers during retros, and paddling down the Charles during the warmer months are simply the beginning.

SethMeet Seth – our quality control man, subscriber of (and living) This Developer’s Life, most closely personified by a strong spring lager, and powerless to the smile a clever line of code brings.

1. What do you do?

I’m a software engineer on the OfficeWriter team, so I spend my days hunting bugs, implementing cool new features, and trying to come up with new products.

2. What are you listening to right now?

Lake Street Dive – Clear a Space

3. If you could build any app, what would it be and why?

A contact de-duplication/management app that actually works well.

Also a bus/train app that just shows all departure times at the nearest stop…why do I need to choose a stop? My phone knows where I am!

4. When you were 5 what did you want to be and why?

In my early years I wanted to be a nature and wildlife photographer, working for National Geographic.  I was always going around taking pictures of landscapes and animals.  On our family trips to national parks, my younger brother and I would always get as close as we could to the wildlife (including a grizzly bear once) to get a good photo.

Bringing Watertown together for a Boston Strong BBQ

Thank you to all who attended the Boston Strong BBQ last week. We had a wonderful time getting to know our Watertown neighbors, while eating delicious food and supporting a great cause. With your help, we were able to raise $350 for the Lutheran Church Charities K-9 Comfort Dogs. We were excited by the strong turnout – from students at the Harvard Business School to our next-door businesses at Air Graphics and Sasaki to those who simply saw the sign and flyers and decided to stop by. Thank you again for coming out to support a wonderful cause and share in the strength and pride of our city. We’re looking forward to more Watertown BBQs and community events over the summer.

For the full photo album visit our Facebook page and feel free to tag yourself. To read the Watertown Tab’s write-up of the event visit their site here: Watertown Companies Team Up to Comfort Community

We Are One Boston

Last week, our home was invaded, our safety threatened. We’re still trying to process and heal, but we take comfort in knowing the strength and pride of this city, this place, this town.

We want to express our complete and sincere gratitude to the military personnel, Boston PD, and government agencies who spent countless, sleepless hours to ensure the safety of our residents and give our city peace of mind. For that we are extremely grateful. We also want to express our gratitude to the cities globally who showed their support for our city.

Our hearts, thoughts, and prayers are with those who lost their lives, are healing in the hospitals, and those grieving from these events. We’re not there yet, but we’re rebuilding, we’re healing, we’re finding our new set of normalcy. We could not be more proud of the heroic efforts of the police, military personnel and Bostonians alike, and to have the privilege to call this city home. We are Boston. We are Boston Strong.

Meet the Team: Nick

Hello and welcome to our Meet the Team series, in which we aim to give you deeper insight into the minds and personalities of those who make up this eclectic, close-knit group. We are developers, marketers, and technical support engineers, and at work we craft everything from Microsoft reporting APIs to mobile email applications. And outside of work? Let’s just say racing against the machine during hackathons, building architecturally sound beer towers during retros, and paddling down the Charles during the warmer months are simply the beginning.

Meet the TeamMeet Nick. Our systems admin and skilled crew champ and cook. While he claims he doesn’t know what’s wrong with your wi-fi (see below), we’re pretty sure he can fix just about anything.

1. What do you do?
I get paid to play with computers? In all seriousness, I’m the systems admin for SoftArtisans, which means I maintain our server infrastructure, build system images, troubleshoot printers, reset passwords, and ensure that our websites stay up.

2. What are you listening to right now?
Lately, I’ve been listening to Spotify quite a bit, but usually I just have the Hype Machine’s popular channel on. It’s a great place to discover artists, and really changed how I listen and think about music over the past few years.

3. If you could build any app, what would it be and why?
Something that lets me execute remote commands from my phone – simple stuff like resetting a password, rebooting a server, restarting a service – that sort of thing. It’d be a huge security hole in any network, but it’d be nice to have when I’m out to lunch and just need to do something quick.

4. When you were 5 what did you want to be and why?
I wanted to be a Marine Biologist because I was fascinated with Robert Ballard (the guy who found the Titanic, the Bismark, and a number of other ships). Sadly, I soon realized that most of them don’t spend all their time hunting for shipwrecks.

5. If you were a beer what would you be and why? Continue reading Meet the Team: Nick

Staff Picks: Apps to Use, News to Read on the Commute

Credit: tjba.comOnce a week I snoop around the office, bothering my coworkers with questions on what they’re reading, listening to, consuming, or any other random inquiries I’d like to subject them to. Sometimes they even respond.

The questions:
 1. What did you read this week?
2. What is the latest app you are all excited about?

The answers:

David, CEO of Riparian Data

1. Reality is Broken

2. We’ve used GroupMe pretty extensively this week at SXSW and it has worked out well. GroupMe is a free group messaging app for your mobile device.

Christina, User Experience Designer

1. Would you buy Gucci off your Smartphone?

2. Little Inferno has been fun over the weekend. It takes about 15min of play before getting into the story line though.

Ozgur, Software Engineer
1. I read this article on Mysterious Bacterium Found in Antarctic Lake. Although, I just saw this blog post that disputed it, saying there was not actually a new bacteria. So now I don’t know what to believe.
2. Although it is not an “app,” I have been looking into the functional programming language F#.

Kristen, Sales Rep

  1. Florida Anglers Liven up Spring Break by Reeling Sharks onto the Beach
  2. Poshmark. It’s like ebay for clothes, but much easier.

Annie, Executive Account Manager

1. What Most School’s Don’t Teach by Code.org

2. Seconds – interval timer/training

Holiday Heroes with Youth Villages

Holiday HeroesBuzz Lightyear, Legos, and pink scooters lined the office as SoftArtisans and Riparian Data partnered with Youth Villages to bring gifts and the joy of the holidays to local Boston youth.

Youth Villages is a private nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting low-income children and their families overcome barriers of emotional or behavioral struggles and achieve long-term success. As their motto propones, they are a “force for families,” using Evidentiary Family Restoration approaches to work with troubled children. Each year, they help over 18,000 children and families from more than 20 states.  Holiday Heroes is Youth Villages’ largest initiative of the year and provides gifts and winter essentials to the children and families in their programs, who are often unable to afford even the basic necessities, let alone gifts, during the holiday season.

This year, SoftArtisans and Riparian Data employees came together to support this cause through
a company shopping trip, sponsoring a dozen children with art supplies, toy cars, books, and even a Spiderman mask or two. As an employee of SoftArtisans, I am truly inspired by the kind and giving hearts of my fellow employees, and the eagerness in which they participated. It warmed my holiday and I hope it inspires you to volunteer this season and throughout the new year.

To find out more about Youth Villages and learn how you can help not only during the holiday season but throughout the year, please visit www.youthvillages.org. They are truly an inspiring organization staffed with selfless and passionate people, aiming to make a difference among Boston youth and their families.

May your holidays be filled with joy and maybe a Lego or two!
